- Hubble Space Telescope Astrometry Science Team
- See how astrometry, one of the oldest branches of astronomy, uses the Hubble Space Telescope, one of the newest tools of astronomy. Interrogate our home page to find out what we do, who we are, and what we've done. Look over our shoulder as we search for planets around a nearby star. We use the Fine Guidance Sensors aboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) to measure star positions, study binary stars and study stellar motions. Primarily, stellar positions yield parallaxes which provide information on distance. The distances to nearby stars calibrate the entire astronomical distance scale. Monitoring star position may reveal previously unseen companions. We search for planets near Proxima Centauri and Barnard's Star. We also work to tie the HIPPARCOS reference frame to an extragalactic (non-rotating) reference frame. We study binary stars unresolvable using ground-based techniques. We inspect stars to determine whether or not they are binary. We use the Planetary Camera to obtain images of stars in globular clusters. The precision with which we can measure positions is so high, that after 3-5 years a second image will show motions of stars in clusters 6 kpc distant.

The Istituto di Radioastronomia (IRA) is one of the institutes
operated by the Italian National Research Council (CNR). It has
a staff of about 100, astronomers, electronic engineers-physicists, software specialists,
technical and administrative support. In addition, people from the University
Astronomy and Physics Departments are affiliated with the Institute. The
Institute headquarters are in Bologna. Other sections of the institute
are located in Firenze, Matera, Medicina Noto and Cagliari.
IRA operates the "Northern Cross Radiotelescope" built in 1960 and located in Medicina (near Bologna). It also operates the two 32-m radio telescopes at Medicina and Noto (Sicily) which are part of the European VLBI Network (EVN). A new 64-m radio telescope, the SRT, is under construction in Sardinia (near Cagliari). - http://www.ira.cnr.it/ - Categories: dept radio

- About the Henry A. Rowland Department of Physics and Astronomy: Current research activities can be divided roughly into five areas: solid-state physics, high-energy physics, astrophysics, plasma spectroscopy, and theoretical physics. Work in the Center for Astrophysical Sciences (CAS) at JHU is now centered in three areas: developing instrumentation for astronomical observations, particularly from space; optical observational astronomy from the ground and space; and theory. Two large space astronomy projects are currently active in CAS: the Hopkins Ultraviolet Telescope, a far-UV spectrophotometer which made its first flight aboard the space shuttle in December, 1990, and its second flight on March 2, 1995; and the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer, a free-flying satellite whose launch is expected in 2000.

- Joint Institute for VLBI in Europe / European VLBI Network (JIVE / EVN)
- The European VLBI Network (EVN) was formed in 1980 by a consortium of five of the major radio astronomy institutes in Europe (the European Consortium for VLBI). Since 1980, the EVN and the Consortium has grown to include 9 institutes with 12 telescopes in 8 western European countries as well as associated institutes with telescopes in Poland, Russia, Ukraine and China. Proposals for additional telescopes in Spain and Italy are under consideration, and furthermore, the EVN can be linked to the 7-element Jodrell Bank MERLIN interferometer in the UK and to the US Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) to create a " global network" . In 1993 the Joint Institute for VLBI in Europe (JIVE) was created, with the Netherlands Foundation for Research in Astronomy (Dwingeloo) acting as the host institute. It will provide both scientific user support and a correlator facility. Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) achieves ultra-high angular resolution and is a multi-disciplinary technique e.g. imaging of extragalactic radio sources, geodesy and astrometry.

- McDonnell Center for the Space Sciences (MCSS)
- The McDonnell Center for the Space Sciences exists to encourage scientists to work together on research problems that span or transcend traditional departmental lines. This is done through formal programs such as regular colloquia, and informally through the common bond of fellowship in the Center. Space science, broadly defined as the study of the universe and our relationship to it, is simply too vast an area to be the province of a single discipline. Understanding the formation of the solar system is equally the task of the chemist who measures isotope effects in meteorites, the astronomer who observes planetary atmospheres or interstellar dust, and the theoretical physicist who studies gravitational collapse. Faculty and students of the Center thus belong to one of the basic, traditional science departments, yet overlap strongly in their research work.

integrated optical, mechanical, electronical and computer techniques. There are about
520 staff members working in NAIRC, including one China Academician,
17 senior researchers and professors, 60 senior engineers and 150

testing instruments, large and medium optical fabricating machines, of which
some are very rare in China. NAIRC is specialized in
optical process technology for aspheric surface, birefringent crystal, etc. Its
off axis aspheric technique is in the domestic lead position.
The technology of antenna panel for millimetre wavelength radio telescope
is also being advanced in China. NAIRC adopts astronomical technique
and methods research as its subject direction. Its main developing
areas are the instruments for stellar, solar and satellite observations, astrometric and
radio astronomical instruments and other instruments by comprehensive techniques. The great
achievements have been obtained in basic research field such as
the active optics and astronomical optical interferometry, which have been
placed as the major research projects of Chinese Academy of
Sciences. Especially, after finishing the pre-research in NAIRC, the Large Sky
Area Multi-objects Fibre Spectroscopy Telescope (LAMOST) has been rated as
one of the major national scientific projects.
NAIRC is an authorized unit for training M.Sc and Ph.D students with the subject of "Astronomical Instruments and Methods". NAIRC is having wide international contacts with more than 20 countries. - Stichting ASTRonomisch Onderzoek in Nederland / Netherlands Foundation for Research in Astronomy (ASTRON, Dwingeloo)
-
The Stichting ASTRonomisch Onderzoek in Nederland(Netherlands Foundation for Research in
Astronomy) is a government funded institute with a mission of
developing and maintaining innovative instrumentation and observing facilities for astronomers
in the Netherlands.
Our strategy to do this is to provide front-line observing facilities for Dutch astronomers across a broad range of frequencies and techniques.
To this end, we built and operate the radio telescope at Westerbork, one of the largest and most sensitive radio telescopes in the world. We also develop advanced instrumentation for studying the content, structure and evolution of the Universe, and for exploring exotic physical phenomena that cannot be studied in the laboratory.
Our ambition for the future is to help develop the technologies necessary for a new generation of sensitive radio telescopes, capable of detecting objects over the entire past history of the Cosmos. - http://www.astron.nl/ - Categories: dept

The research at the Theoretical Astrophysics Section in Tuebingen (TAT) is mainly targeted on projects related to sources of gravitational waves. Gravitational waves were predicted theoretically by Einstein already a century ago. Over five decades of efforts in constructing several large-scale gravitational wave detectors, vindicated on September 2015 with the first direct detection of gravitational waves by merging black holes..
